promote the region and
Ukraine and to give
unforgettable cultural
experience to the
residents of the city.
The festival is another
important motivational
factor for tourism
development and could be
attractive fact for
investments in the
tourism
infrastructure”.So,

International
Theatre Festival “Golden Lion”
The
origin of the Festival dates back to the year 1989 when
all-Ukrainian Festival of alternative non-state theatres was
held in Lviv for the first time. These theatres were
emerging on the wave of reconstructing processes in our
country on the basis of theatre groups, Schools etc. The
festival owns its existence to The Ministry of Culture and
Arts of Ukraine , Ukrainian Theatre Union, Lviv Regional
Culture Administration, as well as Lviv Voskresinnia Theatre
, which traditionally hosts the Golden Lion festival. The
Festival received its present name “Golden Lion” in 1992
when it already became a full-fledged festival in Ukraine.
The first festival became the festival of experiment in the
theatre. The word experiment became a key word in the
festival in 1994, which became the first festival of a youth
experimental theatre. Starting with the year 1996 the motto
of the festival is “Classics through experiment”.
International Theatre Festival “Golden Lion” is a state
festival which takes place once in two years in Lviv on the
basis of Theatre “Voskresinnia” headed by Yaroslav
Fedoryshyn. The Festival is a member of IETM and IFEA.
During the time of its existence the Festival hosted more
than 2500 actors from Belarus’, Turkmenia, Lithuania, Latvia,
Estonia, Poland, Moldova, Serbia, Slovakia, Belgium, France,
Holland, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Russia, Germany, USA,
England, Georgia and other countries.
A lot of famous actors
and directors were participating in the festival: Ada
Rohovtseva, Donatas Banionis, Rimas Tuminas, Roman Viktiuk,
Daniel Olbryhskyi, Konstiantyn Raikin, Valentyna Talyzina,
Bohdan Stupka, Hryhoriy Hladiy and a lot of foreign
producers and critics.
The Festival unites all the
tendencies of the artistic and theatrical progress. The
Festival is shaping a positive image of the city and of the
whole country on the international theatrical arena. It also
stimulates the development of the theatre in the region. It
also helps the city to attract tourists to the city and to
expose the best pieces of world culture to the audience of
our country.

Theatre Festival The Golden Lion International Theatre
Festival. Lviv, Ukraine. 20-28 October 1996. The third
Golden Lion International Theatre Festival in Lviv, Ukraine
was the first on a large scale, attracting about twenty
institutionalized theatre companies in its main program and
an almost equal number of small, experimental, and youth
companies in the "off" program. The Festival program
included companies from various Ukrainian cities; the former
Soviet republics of Belarus, Lithuania, Latvia, Russia, and
Kyrgyzia; as well as from Poland, Slovakia, the Czech
Republic, Rumania, Bulgaria, Finland, Germany, and Belgium.
The festival invited twelve jurors from all over the world (including
myself from the United States), along with critics and
artistic directors from other European theatre festivals. The ancient city of Lviv, the site of the festival, has a
long history, which is typical of Eastern Europe. It was
established in the thirteenth century, as Civitas de Leo (in
Latin) and Lwów (in Polish). Lviv initially served as an
important crossroads for trade and commerce, but it quickly
grew as a Polish political and cultural center, boasting
examples of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Neoclassical, and
Secessionist architecture, including several magnificent
theatres. After the...Braun,
